KRAGERØ KOMMUNE

Utsikten

It was here that Heuch had his observation tower, the small hill located west of Gunnulvsvann or Wiborgtjenna as it is called today. You can still see remnants of a well-constructed road that went from Stabbestad farm (the nursing home) up to the viewpoint. It was a approximately 3 meters wide cobblestone road, about a 20-minute walk from the farm. P.A. Heuch owned Stabbestad farm during the late 17th to early 18th century, and it was during this period that the observation tower was built. The tower at the top was a gazebo, where people could enjoy the view towards the sea. It's uncertain how tall the tower was, but it was very high and served as a landmark for sailors. The base of the tower measured 5x4.50 meters. On all four sides, there were large beams slanting from the tower down to the rock, secured with lead. Inside the tower, there was a staircase like in a lighthouse, and at the top, there was a glass house. It had a veranda surrounding it with railings. Inside the tower, there was a very good and large telescope that Nils Ellingsen in Sandvika near Stabbestad had taken care of. In the 1850s, the tower was in very poor condition, and almost no one dared to go up there.

Wiborgtjenna below the tower was built in 1754 by the Wiborg family in connection with the mills in the stream. Later, the pond was used as an ice pond by the Wiborgs.
